Imagine the potential negative environmental impact of 760 + contestants in our pristine woods.  The race committee has over the years taken steps to do our part to minimize our footprint.  Below are some of the steps we have taken to make the Hyner View Trail Challenge the greenest race in Central PA!

Start saving your old shoes now and bring them to our drop-off bin.  This effort is made possible through the Nike Grind compaign.

  • We can only recycle athletic shoes (running shoes, sneakers, etc.)
  • We will accept all brands of running shoes
  • No running shoes containing metal (Including metal eyelets or grommets)
  • No cleats or dress shoes
  • No wet, damp or muddy running shoes
  • No sandals or flip-flops
  • No electronic light-up or flashing shoes
  • Shoes cannot be tied together or in plastic bags

Thanks to the efforts of a local Boyscouts troop and the National Guard, three huge water tanks will be made available for the checkpoints.  Local sponsor Kathy's Cafe of Hughesville PA has donated cases of biodegradable corn based cups for all the checkpoinnts.  Biodergradable dishes, cutlery, and cups will be used for the post event meals as well. Troegs will be providing kegs instead of glass bottles this year. We will have some bottles of water and soda, but we want to keep it at a minimum.

Wayne Township Landfill has again stepped up to help with the recycling effort.  All the recycle bins will be delivered and picked up for the event along with a bin for the Nike recycled shoe program!  Thank you Wayne Township!

We will be avoiding the use of plastic bags by using recycleable biodegradeable bags provided through a donation from the Woolrich Company.  These backpack type sacks can be reused for a many occassions or outings.

We will stage a car pool area in Lock Haven for the last 20 miles from Lock Haven to Hyner.  More details soon on that one.  Consider your travel arrangements if you are coming in from out of town and try to hook-up with others from your area!
